Garage Skateshop has been a skate shop since 1995. What are the parts of a skateboard?

A skateboard has six main parts: the deck, grip tape, trucks, wheels, bearings and hardware. Bushings and riser pads are smaller parts you swap to tune the feel.

• Deck: the wooden board. Width is the number that matters most, and most skaters ride 8.0" to 8.5". Shop skateboard decks from Anti-Hero, Baker, April, GX1000 and more.
• Grip tape: the sandpaper sheet on top that keeps your shoes on the board. Grip tape from Mob and Polar.
• Trucks: the metal axles that turn the board. Sold as a pair and sized to your deck. Thunder, Venture, Independent, Ace and Krux.
• Wheels: urethane wheels, measured by size (mm) and hardness (durometer). Spitfire, OJ and Dial Tone.
• Bearings: eight per board, two in each wheel. Bones and Bronson.
• Hardware: the eight bolts and nuts that hold the trucks to the deck. Usually 7/8" to 1" without risers.

How much does it cost to build a skateboard?

A skateboard built from pro parts usually costs $200 to $255, and about $220 with mid-range parts. That's based on regular Garage prices: a deck around $76, trucks around $53 a pair, wheels around $40, bearings around $38, grip around $13 and hardware around $3. A budget build with a sale deck, Thunder Polished trucks and Bones Reds bearings comes in closer to $165. Prices checked September 2026.

Is it cheaper to build your own skateboard or buy a complete?

A pre-built complete is usually cheaper up front, because the brand picks budget parts to hit a price. Building your own costs more, but you choose every part: the width you want, trucks that match it, wheels for where you skate. Parts also wear out one at a time, so a board built from real skate brands keeps going as you replace pieces instead of the whole setup. How to match skateboard parts

• Trucks to deck: the axle should end close to the edge of the deck. With Independent, for example, a 139 fits about an 8.0" deck, a 144 about 8.25", a 149 about 8.5" and a 159 about 8.75" to 9.0". Every truck brand numbers its sizes differently, so check the brand's chart on each product.
• Wheels to terrain: 99a to 101a, 50mm to 54mm for street and skateparks. Softer and bigger wheels for rough ground and cruising.
• Bearings: ABEC ratings were made for machinery, not skateboards, so don't chase the number. A trusted skate brand like Bones or Bronson matters more.
• Hardware to risers: add about 1/8" of bolt length for every 1/8" of riser. Riser pads give bigger wheels room and cut down on wheel bite.

What do you need to build a skateboard?

A deck, a sheet of grip tape, a pair of trucks, four wheels, eight bearings and a set of eight bolts. Riser pads and a skate tool are optional but worth having.

What size trucks do I need for my skateboard?

Pick trucks with an axle width close to your deck width. For example, Independent 144s fit an 8.25" deck and 149s fit an 8.5" deck. The size chart for each truck brand is on the product page.

Will you put my skateboard together?

Yes. Pick your deck, trucks, wheels, bearings, hardware and grip in Build A Complete and choose free assembly by Garage Skateshop. You can also get the parts unassembled and set it up yourself. Assembled boards are final sale.

Can I return skateboard parts?

Unused parts in sellable condition can be returned within 30 days of shipment. Once a deck or wheels have been skated, or a complete has been put together, they can't be returned. Sale items are final sale.

How fast do skate orders ship?

Orders ship Monday through Friday from Orange County, California. Orders placed after 11:00 AM Pacific start processing the next business day.
