GX1000 is a San Francisco skateboard brand and crew started around 2008 by filmer Ryan Garshell, known for bombing San Francisco's hills. Garage Skateshop, a Southern California skate shop in business since 1995, carries GX1000 decks, including the OG Logo, Sean Greene's Lightning deck and the Michael Jang Bride series, shipped from Orange County, California.
What does GX1000 stand for?
GX1000 combines founder Ryan Garshell's last name with the Sony VX1000, the camcorder he filmed with. The VX1000 was a popular camera in skateboarding, and Garshell kept shooting with it even as the industry moved to HD.
Who runs GX1000?
Ryan Garshell started GX1000 around 2008, making skate videos for Slap Magazine's website. Stephen McClintock joined later and pushed to put out boards and clothing to go with the videos. GX1000 is based in San Francisco, and its crew is known for hill bombing and fast, raw street skating.
What is hill bombing?
Hill bombing is riding a skateboard straight down a steep hill at high speed, often through traffic and intersections. GX1000's videos made San Francisco hill bombing famous. As one member put it, the point isn't going the fastest, it's scaring yourself and feeling alive.
Is GX1000 still active?
Yes. GX1000 still makes videos and puts out new decks and clothing. Its 2022 video is titled Right Here for Pablo, after crew member Pablo Ramirez, who died in 2019. Earlier GX1000 videos include Adrenaline Junkie (2017), Roll Up (2018) and El Camino (2018).
