Choosing your first deck and FAQs
Choosing your deck
This step should never be a difficult one. Typically, if you have skated for a while you most likely know or are familiar with what shape and size is comfortable to you. If its your first time there are a couple of factors to think about before purchasing your first deck. These factors include brand, concave, deck construction, size, shape and if you're picky, the graphic itself. Some popular brands are Anti-Hero, Baker Skateboards, Krooked Skateboards, Polar Skate Co, Sour Skateboards and REAL Skateboards. Please note, although there are many brands, widths and shapes, skating is about having fun and no rules. The best way to find what works best for you is to get out there and try it all!
Deck Widths
Choosing your deck width if one of the most important factors when selecting your first deck. Deck sizes range from 7.25"-10.25" and also come in many different shapes. Decks starting at 7.25"-7.5" are considered to be “mini” boards meant as learning decks for younger kids. For modern day “street” skate the deck sizes range from 7.5"-8.6" and are typically the traditional “Popsicle” shape. Boards in sizes 8.6"-10.25" are mostly used for backyard pool and transition/concrete park skating.
Deck Shapes
Today in skateboarding the standard shape used by all brands is the “Popsicle” shape. The Popsicle shape is almost symmetrical in form on the nose and tail. This shape is the best type if you plan on learning how to flip your board. Other shapes are some of those like a hammerhead and others have shovel noses or tapered. Brands that use the shapes outside of the traditional Popsicle shape are Black Label Skateboards, Heroin Skateboards, Powell Peralta, Scram Skates and Welcome Skateboards
